BIKE UMD

Did you know that there are exciting things happening in campus biking?

Rent a bike for a semester:  just $60 at the campus bike shop.

Be a Bicycle Ambassador: BikeUMD is a campus program with the goal of promoting bicycling within the UMD community. DOTS is looking for energetic, punctual students who are comfortable riding a bike and eager to advocate for improved bicycle facilities on our campus. Candidates should be interested in promoting safe and fun biking behaviors and events. Interested students should not expect to graduate before the spring of 2011. See attached flyer to learn more about the benefits of being a Bicycle Ambassador!

Need information on registration and regulations? Visit the Biking Home Page.  Are you a current bike commuter? Please email your current commute for inclusion on our commute map to Sevgi Erdogan (serdogan@umd.edu).

Did I mention registration is free? Try cycling instead of driving, the campus and your waistline will thank you.

Carpool and Save 50% on Your Parking Permit!

The Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) is excited to announce our new Zimride rideshare system. Zimride is a fun and easy way to find rides where you need to go or coordinate your daily commute.  Zimride makes it easy to share the seats in your car or catch a ride with fellow Maryland friends, colleagues or classmates.

It's simple. Have a car? Add your ride offer and split the costs by driving with friends, coworkers or classmates. Don't have a car? Add your ride request and find a ride. Sign up and post where you're coming from and when.  Maryland's Zimride system will help you find others making similar trips.  Log in using your UMD Directory ID by clicking "Log In" then add your ride today.

To participate in UMD Zimride, please do the following:

1) Visit http://zimride.umd.edu and log-in
2) Add your ride offer or request

If you carpool to and from campus, and have a current individual parking permit, you are eligible to receive a reduction in your permit cost.  For more information, please visit www.transportation.umd.edu/alt_trans/carpool.html.

SSC Campaigning to Save the Wooded Hillock

Picture
The SSC is working hard to stop the University from developing 9 acres of forest known as the Wooded Hillock and destroying hundreds of trees, a habitat for native plants and animals, a living classroom, and a critical piece of the Anacostia watershedAs part of the East Campus Redevelopment Initiative, the Hillock is the site for new University Facility Services parking lots, storage sheds, and office building. Instead of constructing these facilities on areas already paved, the University has decided, without any input from students, to clear-cut some of its last forested areasLearn more about our Save the Hillock Campaign and how you can support our cause at www.savethehillock.com
