What We Do

Picture
The Student Sustainability Committee (SSC) is a department of the University of Maryland’s undergraduate Student Government Association (SGA) that advises the SGA and University decision makers to ensure that the environmental sustainability priorities of the undergraduate student body are met.

SSC promotes and implements campus and community environmental sustainability projects in the areas of transportation, water and energy use, food and materials consumption, development and landscape planning, environmental education, and beyond.

The committee also organizes and sponors events like the campus-wide Earth Day Celebration.

Join us at a meeting! Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 9th, at 6:30pm in Jimenez 1120.

Our History

SSC was born in the fall semester of 2008 when a group of students committed to making the University a better place decided to form a council to turn ideas into actions. In 2008-2009, we solicited environmental sustainability project ideas from students and advised and assisted them in their project implementation. Projects we worked on included the campaign to Save the Wooded Hillock (still in the works), a successful campaign to make the University of Maryland America's Greenest Campus, Recyclemania 2009 and 2010, and the Restoration of Campus Creek.
In 2010, we plan to expand our scope and turn our own ideas into action in addition to the ideas of our peers.
